Smart grid: Power from an array of intelligently linked sources
Eco-friendly, efficient and extremely flexible – Smart grids are the future of electricity supply. Instead of purchasing power from only a handful of centralised suppliers, consumers can also feed electricity into the public network – for example, from solar power systems or cogeneration units. Both these small power generation units owned by power consumers and large-scale plants such as offshore wind farms increase the share of volatile energy sources. This is where the smart grid comes in, reliably matching energy supply and demand.
Smooth smart grid communication – all components of the smart grid need to be perfectly coordinated to ensure the decentralised supra-regional electricity grid functions without fail. For this reason, a host of different standards including the IEC 61850, CIM (IEC 61970 and 61968), IEC 60870 and IEC 62351 establish appropriate standardisation requirements. On behalf of energy consumers, TÜV SÜD tests and inspects the systems connected to the Smart Grid to ensure their conformity to standards and interoperability. In doing so, we aim at finding the most cost-effective solutions and ensuring their integration into existing infrastructures.
